Historic First: ‘VarahDev Jayanti’ was celebrated as the Earth Conservation Day

DSC_0135Vrindavan, 8th September, 2013: The appearance day of Lord Varah Dev was celebrated as the Earth Conservation Day’ by ‘Friends of Vrindavan’. A special ceremony to distribute the green awards was organised at the ‘Bhramar Ghat Hall’ of the Gambhira Ashram situated in Jai Singh Ghera. A total number of five ‘Vrindavan Green Awards’ were distributed to a distinguished temple, school, hospital, campaigner and legal intervener. The Meera Bai Temple of Vrindavan was given the ‘Green temple award’ for promoting Vrindavan Concept and practicing the eco-friendly rituals. The Bhaktivedanta Gurukula & International School Vrindavan won the ‘Green School Award for 2013, the Bhaktivedanta Hospice was given the award of ‘Green Hospital’, National President of the Yamuna Rakshak Dal was awarded for ‘Green campaign’, Madhumangal Shukla was chosen for the ‘Green legal intervener’ award.
The programme began by worshipping the image of Shri Radha Raman ji, Varah Dev and Vrinda Devi and the mangalacharan sung by Shri Damodar Sharma, followed by the Dashavtar Strotra recited by the students of the Bhaktivedanta Swami Gurukula.
The Chief Development Officer of Mathura Shri N.K. Paliwal distributed the awards to those institutions & personalities. Shri Pradyumna Pratap Singh, Shri Radha Kant Das, Shri Sameer, Shri Jai Krishna Das and Shri Madhumangal Shukla received the awards respectively on behalf of their institutions and organizations. In his address Shri Paliwal said that he was impressed by FoV’s initiative to honor the temples and other institutions and individuals. By awarding the individuals and institutions for their efforts of environment protection a green brigade can be created. He cited the value of grass by saying that even the grass plays big role to protect the environment. It prevents a place to become a desert. Therefore each tree and the other creations of nature have its own value. So, even a child can take steps to conserve the ‘Mother Earth’.
Event convener Acharya Naresh Narayan said that it may be the first time in the history of world that we are celebrating the Earth Conservation Day on the occasion of Varah Dev Jayanti. Lord Varah Dev symbolizes the ‘Earth conservation efforts’ as He saved the earth from being completely submerged in the water by the demon Hiranakshya. Why should we follow just the international days for the earth, environment, bio-diversity etc. when we have the appearance day of our different Gods who saved the mother earth and the environment? quipped Acharya.
Mrs. Manju Sharma from the Adhyatma Samiti also addressed the gathering. She said we should celebrate the earth every day, just not waiting for a particular day but we should make effort every day. She said that the youth and the women have bigger role to play for the protection of the earth.
Jagannath Poddar, Director of Friends of Vrindavan said that the awardees should work on other institutions to make them green and spread the message of the purpose of the green awards. The ‘Vrindavan Green Awards’ will be given in every year. He said that FoV believes in spreading the ‘Vrindavan Consciousness’ among the people, which can save the earth.
Shri Jagadananda Das, famous scholar of Vaishnavism was also felicitated in this event. He was the ‘guest of honor’ of the function.
